Garden Life - Tales from the Garden

Snail Cures...

Slugs, What do we do about them. Ravaging the lettuce, munching the cabbage and slaughtering the hostas. What is to be done! Visiting an avowed non-gardening friend, one of our readers was asked how to stop the slugs from eating their way through the garden. A magnolia had been defoliated and a hosta, well, it was once a hosta. Now potted, both magnolia and hosta were still the favourite brunch of these slimy members of our garden wildlife.

"Vaseline," our reader replied, "Vaseline wiped around the edge of the pot will stop them. A thick band should last all season."

The non-gardener disappeared into the house, returning triumphant with a jar of Vicks. "Will this work?" she asked. "I don't have any Vaseline." Applied it not only seemed to deter the slugs but cleared up the hosta's cold as well!
