Subtropical Plants For New Zealand Gardens
Jacqueline Sparrow and Gil Hanly (Random House NZ, 2002)

The tempting cover photograph of a gloriosa lily gives an idea of the colourful and flamboyant subtropicals covered in this book, another in the Godwit New Zealand Garden Guide series.

The brief introduction is followed by sections on trees and shrubs, climbers, palms and cycads, bulbs and perennials and orchids. There is not long cultural section as cultural advice is given plant by plant. And if you weren't sure what a cycads was, you will be after reading this book.

A definite plus for anyone who gardens in the warmer areas of New Zealand, and it is New Zealand written and photographs ensure that you will be able to grow and to buy these plants. If you aspire to be a subtropical gardener, get this book.

(Recommended Retail NZ$34.95).
